Nexus
‘Nexus’ realises reconnection of land and the people to its routes in a profound way. The native parklands are a space of connectivity, education and sustainability. Raising the building off the site opens the ground level up be rehabilitated back into banksia wetlands as it was before European settlement. Native parkland offers unique educational and recreational opportunities for the university commune. Two central cores with a concrete diagrid support the building and thus harmonise the architectural language of Curtin. The external envelope is defined by a green façade cast into the floor slab of each level and irrigated from water collected on the expansive roof. An emphasis on flexibility makes the most of limited space and creates value for the Curtin commune. The flexibility of internal typology provides value for the school and breaks down social disconnects and the building as a whole is spacious, economical and distinctly Curtin.
