The ‘Second’ Landscape
The generator bias of the design is ‘regaining the lost landscape’, maintaining a connection to the land and creating ‘new’ paths to follow, linking to the existing built form of building 410. Jane Jacobs’ approach for how to generate a positive urban environment was used to determine the site strategy and how the building will integrate into the existing context. The internal programme promotes visual connection and communication, as these are key in creating a vibrant educational facility that encourages innovative ideas. Integrating the mixed-use provides opportunities for the cross-pollination of education, research and industry. In addition to retail spaces, restaurants, cafes and bars create a vibrant atmosphere at different times of day, and different industry opportunities are offered with small co-working spaces and affordable offices spaces for small, medium and large architectural firms. Housing studio spaces in the seemingly solid concrete tower is homage to the Brutalist origins of the building 201. Through interlocking with the contrasting volume this creates public space on top of and within the structure.
